About Us

About Us

The literal meaning of Ushr is “one-tenth.” Technically, it refers to the Zakat on agricultural produce. Just like Zakat, Ushr is also a compulsory act of worship in Islam. It is a divine system designed to ensure social justice, reduce poverty, and promote economic balance in society. Despite its significance, Ushr remains one of the most overlooked obligations in Bangladesh, and Ushr Foundation is working to revive its true spirit and practice.

Our foundation works to raise awareness, provide guidance, and offer practical solutions, enabling this powerful system of wealth distribution to truly benefit society. our mission is to eradicate poverty by harnessing the power of Zakat the obligatory almsgiving in Islam with a special focus on Ushr, the Zakat specifically levied on agricultural produce. We believe that by properly collecting, distributing, and educating about these forms of charity, we can create lasting change in the lives of farmers, rural families.

We envision a world where poverty is a relic of the past, and every individual has access to necessities, education, and economic opportunities. By reviving the practice of Ushr, which requires Muslims to give 10% of rain-fed crops or 5% of irrigated crops as charity, we seek to bridge the gap between urban prosperity and rural hardship. Our vision extends beyond immediate relief; we promote long-term self-sufficiency through agricultural training, microfinance, and community development programs. Our work is guided by the Quranic injunction: "And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves you will find it with Allah" (Quran 2:110).

Our Values

At the Ushr Foundation, our work is guided by a deep commitment to core principles that shape every aspect of our mission to alleviate poverty through Zakat and Ushr. These values reflect our dedication to Islamic teachings, community empowerment, and sustainable change.

Our Goals

At the Ushr Foundation, we chase a bold, inspiring dream: to wipe out poverty and ignite lasting prosperity through the sacred principles of Zakat and Ushr. We envision a world where every person, especially those in rural farming communities, enjoys access to life’s essentials, economic opportunities, and the power to shape their own future.

Zakat on Agriculture - Ushr Foundation

At the Ushr Foundation Bangladesh, we are committed to reviving the sacred Islamic practice of Ushr, the Zakat on agricultural produce, to uplift rural communities and combat poverty. Rooted in the Quranic call to “spend in Allah’s way the best portion of the wealth you have earned and of what We have produced for you from the earth” (Quran 2:267), Ushr serves as a powerful tool to ensure social justice and economic balance. By facilitating the collection and distribution of Ushr, we empower farmers, support the needy, and foster sustainable development across Bangladesh’s agricultural heartlands.

Key Aspects of Zakat on Agriculture

  • Irrigation-Based Contribution: Ushr is determined based on the type of irrigation used for cultivation, with distinct amounts required for crops grown on naturally watered lands, such as those fed by rain or rivers, compared to artificially irrigated lands using wells or canals, ensuring fairness in the contribution process.
  • No Minimum Threshold or Time Requirement: Unlike other forms of Zakat, Ushr applies to every harvest without a minimum yield requirement and is due as soon as the crop is ready, enabling immediate support for communities in need.
  • Cultivator’s Duty: The responsibility to pay Ushr lies with the individual who cultivates the land, whether they own it, lease it, or work as a sharecropper, linking the act of charity directly to agricultural efforts.
  • Empowering the Vulnerable: Ushr channels agricultural wealth to uplift the poor, orphans, and those burdened by debt, providing critical resources like food, healthcare, and education to strengthen rural communities.

Our Commitment to the Future
