Ushr or Zakat For Poverty

Ushr Foundation Promotes 10% Ushr on Agricultural Produce

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 02:06 PM +06, the Ushr Foundation in Bangladesh launched an awareness campaign in Rangpur to promote the practice of Ushr, a 10% Zakat on agricultural produce. Rooted in Islamic tradition, Ushr requires farmers to contribute one-tenth of their harvest to support the underprivileged, a principle the foundation is revitalizing to address rural poverty. The event, attended by over 250 farmers and community leaders, featured educational sessions explaining how this contribution can fund essential services like irrigation and food distribution. The foundation highlighted that Ushr, unlike other Zakat forms, is specifically tailored to agriculture, reflecting the sector’s vital role in Bangladesh’s economy.

During the campaign, the foundation showcased success stories where the 10% Ushr contribution has transformed lives, such as funding water pumps for drought-hit villages and establishing grain banks. Farmers learned practical ways to calculate and donate this portion of their yield, ensuring compliance with Islamic guidelines while benefiting their communities. The Ushr Foundation aims to train 800 more farmers by December 2025, providing tools and resources to integrate this practice seamlessly. Local officials commended the initiative, noting its potential to enhance food security and social equity. The foundation also introduced a digital platform to facilitate Ushr donations, encouraging broader participation. As climate challenges threaten agricultural stability, this 10% contribution emerges as a powerful tool for resilience, with the foundation urging farmers to embrace it for a sustainable future. This movement underscores the enduring relevance of Ushr in building a stronger Bangladesh.
